First Aid Course

To enrol in the First Aid course, participants must possess both verbal and written comprehension of the English language.

Additionally, you will need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI) from usi.gov.au.

• We recommend wearing casual and comfortable clothing, as practical training activities may involve lying down, bending, and kneeling. Additionally, please ensure you wear closed-toe footwear for safety during the training.

The First Aid course is conducted entirely in-person, with no online or prior learning requirements necessary.

Participants in the First Aid course will be assessed through practical demonstrations and theoretical evaluations. Practical assessments include performing first aid techniques for various injuries and conditions, conducting primary assessments, managing unconscious casualties, and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Theoretical evaluations will test knowledge of first aid principles, emergency procedures, and legal considerations

Performance Elements

HLTAID009: Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

1. Respond to an Emergency Situation
   
   • Recognise and assess the emergency.
   • Ensure safety for yourself, bystanders, and the casualty.
   • Assess the casualty and determine the need for CPR.
   • Seek assistance from emergency services.
2. Perform CPR Procedures
   
   • Execute CPR according to Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
   • Display respectful behavior towards the casualty.
   • Operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) following the manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Communicate Incident Details
   
   • Accurately convey details of the incident to emergency services.
   • Report incident details in line with workplace procedures.
   • Maintain confidentiality of information as per statutory and organisational policies.
4. Review the Incident
   
   • Recognise potential psychological impacts on yourself and others.
   • Contribute to a review of the first aid response as needed.

HLTAID010: Provide Basic Emergency Life Support

1. Recognise and Respond to an Emergency Situation
   
   • Identify emergencies and assess the situation.
   • Ensure personal safety and the safety of others.
2. Provide Basic Life Support
   
   • Perform CPR and manage unconscious casualties.
   • Use an AED effectively.
   • Address airway obstructions and provide rescue breaths.
3. Communicate with Emergency Services
   
   • Provide accurate information to emergency responders.
   • Follow up on incident reporting procedures.
4. Review and Reflect on the Response
   
   • Evaluate the response and identify areas for improvement.
   • Recognise the importance of psychological support for rescuers.

HLTAID011: Provide First Aid

1. Assess the Situation
   
   • Recognise and evaluate the nature of the emergency.
   • Ensure safety for yourself and others involved.
2. Provide First Aid Treatment
   
   • Administer appropriate first aid for various injuries and illnesses.
   • Perform CPR and manage unconscious casualties.
   • Use an AED and provide assistance for choking.
3. Communicate Incident Details
   
   • Relay information accurately to emergency services.
   • Document the incident according to workplace procedures.
4. Review the Incident
   
   • Reflect on the effectiveness of the first aid response.
   • Identify the need for further training or support.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) acknowledges that individuals who possess the necessary knowledge and skills for competency in specific units of an accredited training package should not have to relearn what they already know.

The RPL process recognises that competencies can be gained through various avenues, including:

• Previous Qualifications
• Work Experience
• Life Experiences

To qualify for RPL, candidates must provide evidence demonstrating their competency. If you believe you are eligible for this assessment pathway, please contact the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for further information.
