Childcare First Aid Course

To enrol in the Childcare First Aid course, participants must possess both verbal and written comprehension of the English language.

Additionally, you will need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI) from usi.gov.au.

• We recommend wearing casual and comfortable clothing, as practical training activities may involve lying down, bending, and kneeling. Additionally, please ensure you wear closed-toe footwear for safety during the training.

The Child Care First Aid course is conducted entirely in-person, with no online or prior learning requirements necessary.

Participants in the Childcare First Aid Course will be assessed through practical demonstrations and theoretical knowledge tests. Practical assessments include performing CPR on manikins, managing conditions such as anaphylaxis and asthma, handling choking incidents, and coordinating responses in multiple casualty scenarios. Theoretical assessments will evaluate understanding of first aid principles, emergency procedures, and legal considerations, as well as the ability to complete incident reports and communicate effectively with parents and emergency services. 

Performance Elements

HLTAID009: Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

1. Recognising Emergency Situations
   
   • Identify and assess the presence of an emergency.
   • Ensure the safety of yourself, bystanders, and the casualty.
   • Evaluate the casualty’s condition to determine the necessity for CPR.
   • Call for emergency assistance as required.
2. Executing CPR Techniques
   
   • Perform CPR in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
   • Show respect and care towards the casualty during the process.
   • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) correctly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Communicating Incident Information
   
   • Provide accurate details about the incident to emergency services.
   • Follow workplace procedures for reporting incidents.
   • Uphold confidentiality and privacy of the casualty’s information as per relevant policies.
4. Reviewing the Response
   
   • Acknowledge the potential psychological effects on yourself and other responders.
   • Participate in a review of the first aid response to enhance future practices.

HLTAID010: Provide Basic Emergency Life Support

1. Assessing and Responding to Emergencies
   
   • Quickly recognise emergencies and assess the situation.
   • Ensure the safety of all individuals involved before providing assistance.
2. Delivering Basic Life Support
   
   • Administer CPR and manage unconscious casualties effectively.
   • Clear airway obstructions and provide rescue breaths as necessary.
   • Address medical emergencies such as asthma attacks or allergic reactions.
3. Effective Communication with Emergency Services
   
   • Relay clear and concise information to emergency responders.
   • Document the incident according to organisational procedures.
   • Maintain confidentiality regarding the casualty’s details.
4. Reflecting on the Emergency Response
   
   • Evaluate the effectiveness of the response and identify areas for improvement.
   • Recognise the need for psychological support and seek help if necessary.
   • Engage in discussions to improve future emergency responses.

HLTAID011: Provide First Aid

1. Evaluating the Emergency Situation
   
   • Assess the scene to determine the nature and severity of the emergency.
   • Prioritise care based on the urgency of the casualties’ conditions.
2. Administering First Aid Treatments
   
   • Provide appropriate first aid for a variety of injuries and medical conditions.
   • Monitor the casualty’s condition until professional help arrives.
   • Adapt first aid techniques based on the specific needs of the casualty.
3. Communicating with Bystanders and Emergency Services
   
   • Provide essential information to emergency responders about the situation.
   • Coordinate with bystanders to assist in managing the emergency.
   • Maintain a calm demeanor to reassure the casualty and others present.
4. Reviewing and Reflecting on the First Aid Response
   
   • Assess the overall effectiveness of the first aid provided and identify lessons learned.
   • Consider the psychological impact of the incident on yourself and others.
   • Participate in a debriefing to discuss improvements for future responses.

HLTAID012: First Aid in an Education and Child Care Setting

1. Recognising and Responding to Emergencies in Child Care
   
   • Identify potential emergencies specific to children and assess the situation.
   • Ensure a safe environment for children and others during the emergency.
2. Providing First Aid to Children
   
   • Administer first aid tailored to the unique needs of infants and children.
   • Perform CPR and manage choking incidents in young children.
   • Address common childhood illnesses and injuries effectively.
3. Communicating with Parents and Emergency Services
   
   • Communicate effectively with parents about the incident and the care provided.
   • Provide accurate information to emergency services when needed.
   • Document the incident in accordance with organisational policies.
4. Reflecting on the Care Provided
   
   • Evaluate the effectiveness of the first aid response in a child care context.
   • Recognise the importance of psychological support for both children and caregivers.
   • Engage in discussions to improve future first aid practices in educational settings.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) acknowledges that individuals who possess the necessary knowledge and skills for competency in specific units of an accredited training package should not have to relearn what they already know.

The RPL process recognises that competencies can be gained through various avenues, including:

• Previous Qualifications
• Work Experience
• Life Experiences
